Two of Australia’s leading online grocery shopping destinations, ShopWings and Grocery Butler, have agreed to a merger of equals, combining their operations into one single entity as of early May 2016. Operating under the brand of ShopWings based in Sydney, the combined business will further accelerate the shift from offline to online grocery shopping, operating in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne.
Both companies started in Australia to offer a convenient and fast way to buy groceries. With industry revenues expected to grow by more than 15% per annum in the coming years and the use of virtual grocery stores becoming more common, the market opportunity is huge.
The merger creates clear synergies, providing the new entity with a cutting-edge technological platform, an enhanced logistics network, an increased client base of currently more than 15,000 and complementary geographical footprint. In addition, ShopWings will be supported by BlueChilli, the leading start-up accelerator in Australia, and remain part of the Asia Pacific Internet Group (APACIG), the joint venture between Oreedo and Rocket Internet. The management team will be led by Guillaume Ang, current COO of ShopWings who will become the CEO of the joined entity, and current CEO of Grocery Butler Michael Parthenides who will lead Melbourne Operations. Manutea Dupont, the current Managing Director for ShopWings will remain on the entity’s board of director along with Michael Parthenides.
Michael Parthenides, CEO Grocery Butler, states: “The merger accelerates the pace at which we will reach our current 18 month objectives. Their tech focussed team and brilliant technology stack are a perfect match for Grocery Butler. We bring to the table our diverse customer base, more than 80 personal shoppers, a complimentary geographical footprint and a capital-efficient approach to business.”
Manutea Dupont, current CEO of ShopWings states: “We are very proud to announce this merger which will help us strengthen our geographical footprint. We will continue to focus on our unique offerings such as ALDI and Coles in the same order or same day IKEA delivery”
Guillaume Ang, the future CEO of ShopWings, states: “Online grocery shopping has huge market potential. Why spend time in queues when you can get your groceries conveniently delivered to your doorstep with just a few clicks? We are convinced of the strategic benefits of the alliance between ShopWings and Grocery Butler, forming a strong market leader with an impressive track record in technology, operations and sales”
